Graduating students from 16 public elementary and four high schools in Muntinlupa City will simply wear their respective school uniforms, minus the toga, during commencement exercises last week of this month.
The Department of Education (DepEd)-Muntinlupa made such directive in compliance with the order of DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus to conduct simple graduation ceremonies.
City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro lauded the move, saying that it is favorable to parents who don't need to spend money for the toga.
San Pedro said that the DepEd's decision comes at an opportune time when prices of basic commodities are rising, which already severely affected the quality of life of ordinary families.
"We are in crisis. Any additional expenses for graduating students are unneccesary," the mayor said.
Earlier, Lapus issued DepEd Order 13 which enumerates policies for graduation ceremonies.
Under the order, Lapus said that public schools are not allowed to collect any graduation fees, non-academic projects should not be imposed as a requirement for graduation, contributions for the annual yearbook must be on a voluntary basis, and extravagant special attire or extraordinary venue for the ceremonies should not be required.
Furthermore, commencement exercises should be scheduled any day between March 24-28, which the public schools in Muntinlupa will certainly comply with, according to San Pedro.
